The Treatment
Port wine stains are vascular birthmarks caused by enlarged blood vessels close to the surface of the skin.
They are usually present from birth and can range in colour from light pink to deeper red, purple, or burgundy. Over time, some port wine stains may become darker, thicker, or more noticeable.
At Reborn Laser Clinic, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus to treat appropriate port wine stains by targeting the blood vessels responsible for their colour.
The system provides access to both 755 nm Alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd wavelengths, allowing treatment to be customized according to your skin tone, the depth and colour of the vessels, and the characteristics of the birthmark.
The goal is gradual lightening and improvement, rather than complete removal in a single treatment.

how it works
Port wine stains contain enlarged blood vessels within the skin.
The GentleMax Pro Plus delivers focused laser energy that is absorbed by blood within these targeted vessels.
This energy creates controlled heat, affecting the targeted vessels so they can gradually become less visible while minimizing unnecessary impact on the surrounding skin.
Over time, the body naturally clears the treated vessels and the colour of the port wine stain may begin to fade.
Because port wine stains vary in depth, colour, thickness, and vessel size, treatment settings are customized rather than applying the same approach to every birthmark.
what it can do

.avif)

Before treatment, we carefully assess the birthmark, your skin tone, its colour and thickness, as well as any previous treatments you may have received.
We also review your medical history, medications, recent sun exposure, and how your skin typically responds and heals following treatment.
Before your appointment, avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure and follow any preparation instructions provided during your consultation.
Your skin should be clean and free of makeup and skincare products before treatment.
The GentleMax Pro Plus delivers controlled laser pulses directly into the vascular area.
You may feel a brief snapping or stinging sensation followed by cooling.
The system uses Candela's Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) to deliver a short burst of cryogen around the laser pulse, helping protect the surface of the skin and improve treatment comfort.
Treatment time depends on the size and location of the port wine stain.
Following treatment, the area may appear red, swollen, or darker than usual.
Some clients may experience temporary bruising or purpura, depending on the treatment settings and the characteristics of the vessels being targeted.
These changes are generally temporary and should improve as the skin heals.
Keep the area cool and treat it gently. Avoid excessive heat and strenuous activity while the skin remains irritated, and protect the treated area carefully from sun exposure.
QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Potentially, but treatment requires careful wavelength and setting selection. The 1064 nm Nd wavelength penetrates more deeply and has lower absorption by epidermal melanin than shorter wavelengths. This can provide greater flexibility when treating vascular concerns in skin with higher levels of melanin. Your individual skin tone, pigmentation history, and risk of pigmentary changes will be assessed before treatment.

Most port wine stains are benign. However, certain port wine stains—particularly those involving specific areas of the face or associated with other symptoms—can occasionally be associated with underlying medical conditions. If there is any reason for concern, we may recommend medical assessment before cosmetic laser treatment.
A treated port wine stain can remain significantly lighter, but some vascular colour may persist or become more noticeable again over time. Because port wine stains are associated with an underlying abnormal blood vessel structure, maintenance treatment may occasionally be required.
Most clients describe the laser pulse as a quick snapping or stinging sensation. The GentleMax Pro Plus uses Candela's Dynamic Cooling Device, which delivers cooling around each laser pulse to help protect the skin and improve treatment comfort.
You may notice some improvement following the first treatment, but port wine stains are generally treated gradually over multiple sessions. The area may temporarily appear darker or more purple immediately after treatment before gradually beginning to fade. Improvement typically builds throughout the treatment series.
Port wine stains generally require multiple treatments. There is no standard number of sessions that applies to everyone. Some areas may respond more quickly, while deeper, darker, or thicker port wine stains may require a longer treatment series. Your response after each session helps guide the ongoing treatment plan.
Complete clearance cannot be guaranteed. The goal is generally to lighten the birthmark and make the vascular discoloration less noticeable. Results depend on several factors, including the colour, depth, thickness, and location of the port wine stain, your skin type, and how the vessels respond to treatment.
Yes. Port wine stains are among the vascular conditions that may be treated with appropriate laser technology. The GentleMax Pro Plus provides access to 755 nm Alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd wavelengths, allowing treatment to be adjusted according to the colour and depth of the vessels and your skin type. Not every port wine stain responds best to the same laser approach, which is why each case is assessed individually.
A port wine stain is a vascular birthmark caused by abnormal or enlarged blood vessels within the skin. It is typically present from birth and may appear pink, red, purple, or burgundy. Unlike some childhood birthmarks, port wine stains generally do not disappear on their own and may become darker or thicker over time.
