TREATMENT PLAN
A series of treatments is typically recommended

The Treatment

Treat redness and pigmentation together.

Poikiloderma of Civatte is a common skin condition that typically appears along the sides of the neck and upper chest.

It often presents as a combination of persistent redness, visible small blood vessels, and brown or mottled pigmentation.

At Reborn Laser Clinic, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus to address the vascular and pigmented components of poikiloderma with a treatment plan tailored to your skin.

Because poikiloderma is not simply redness or pigmentation alone, the treatment approach may vary depending on which component is most prominent.

The goal is to gradually soften the appearance of redness, visible vessels, and uneven pigmentation, creating a clearer and more even-looking neck and décolletage.

how it works

TARGET. BALANCE. FADE.

Poikiloderma involves both vascular and pigmented changes within the skin.

The GentleMax Pro Plus provides access to 755 nm Alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd wavelengths, allowing treatment to be adjusted according to the colour, depth, and type of concern being addressed.

Laser energy can target hemoglobin within visible blood vessels and melanin within areas of unwanted pigmentation.

As treated vessels become less visible and excess pigment gradually clears, the skin can begin to appear calmer, clearer, and more even.

Because the skin of the neck and chest can be more sensitive than the face, treatment is approached carefully and conservatively.

‍

what it can do

PREP

Before treatment, we assess your skin to determine how much of the concern is vascular and how much is pigmentation.

We also consider your skin tone, recent sun exposure, medical history, medications, and how your skin typically responds to laser treatments.

Before your appointment, avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure and follow any skincare instructions provided during your consultation.

Your skin should be clean and free of makeup, fragrance, and skincare products before treatment.

TREAT

The GentleMax Pro Plus delivers controlled laser pulses to areas of redness, visible vessels, or pigmentation.

The wavelength and treatment settings are selected based on your skin and the specific component of poikiloderma being targeted.

Most clients describe the sensation as a quick snapping feeling followed by cooling.

The system's Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) delivers a controlled burst of cryogen to help protect the surface of the skin and improve treatment comfort.

RECOVER

Following treatment, the area may appear red or slightly swollen.

Pigmented areas may temporarily appear darker, while treated vessels can sometimes become more noticeable before gradually fading.

Keep the area cool and treat the skin gently while it heals. Avoid excessive heat and strenuous exercise for the first 24–48 hours, and protect the neck and chest carefully from sun exposure.

Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is especially important for protecting the skin and maintaining your results.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Is laser the best treatment for every case of poikiloderma?

Not necessarily. Poikiloderma can vary significantly from person to person, and different laser technologies may be better suited to different patterns of redness and pigmentation. Pulsed dye laser is one of the established treatment options for the vascular component of poikiloderma of Civatte. If we believe another technology or a dermatologist-led treatment approach would be more appropriate for your skin, we will let you know.

Is treatment suitable for darker skin tones?

Possibly, but treatment needs to be approached carefully. Because poikiloderma contains both pigment and vascular components, there may be a greater risk of unwanted pigment changes in skin with higher levels of melanin. The 1064 nm Nd wavelength has lower absorption by epidermal melanin than shorter wavelengths, which can provide greater flexibility when treating vascular concerns in darker skin types. However, suitability must still be assessed individually. (Candela Medical)

Is poikiloderma the same as rosacea?

No. Although both conditions can involve redness and visible blood vessels, they are different conditions. Rosacea most commonly affects the face and is a chronic inflammatory skin condition. Poikiloderma of Civatte typically develops along the sides of the neck and upper chest and involves both vascular redness and pigmentation.

Can poikiloderma come back?

Yes. Sun exposure and cumulative skin damage can contribute to the development or recurrence of poikiloderma. Laser treatment can improve existing changes, but it cannot prevent new sun-related changes from developing. Consistent sun protection on the neck and chest is one of the most important steps for maintaining your results.

Will poikiloderma go away completely?

Complete clearance cannot be guaranteed. The goal is to reduce the appearance of redness, visible vessels, and pigmentation, allowing the skin to look clearer and more even. Results vary depending on the severity of the condition, how long it has been present, and how your skin responds to treatment.

When will I see results?

Improvement is generally gradual. Redness and visible vessels may begin to fade after treatment, while pigmented areas can temporarily darken before becoming lighter. Overall skin tone and clarity typically improve progressively throughout a treatment series.

Will one treatment be enough?

Usually not. Poikiloderma generally responds best to a series of treatments, particularly when both vascular changes and pigmentation are being addressed. The number of sessions depends on the extent of the discoloration, your skin type, and how your skin responds to treatment.

Can GentleMax Pro Plus treat poikiloderma?

The GentleMax Pro Plus is designed to treat appropriate benign vascular and pigmented lesions, giving us the ability to address different components of poikiloderma. The platform combines 755 nm Alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd wavelengths, allowing treatment to be customized according to your skin and the component that is most prominent. (Candela Medical)

Why does poikiloderma look both red and brown?

Poikiloderma affects more than one component of the skin. The red or purple appearance is associated with superficial blood vessels, while the brown or mottled areas are related to changes in pigmentation. This is why treatment often needs to address both the vascular and pigmented components.

What is poikiloderma of Civatte?

Poikiloderma of Civatte is a combination of redness, visible small blood vessels, brown pigmentation, and sometimes subtle changes in skin texture. It most commonly develops along the sides of the neck and upper chest, often sparing the shaded area directly beneath the chin. Long-term sun exposure is considered an important contributing factor.
